Doug Barnes

Owner and Master Taxidermist

Doug began his trade in taxidermy back in 2001. Starting under some of the best taxidermists in the state, he began his career with a very solid foundation. Shortly thereafter he began to compete on a State and National level. Doug started in the professional ranks and scored his way into the Masters division where he has won some of the highest awards including:

  • Best of Category for Large Life Size Mammal

  • Best of Category Game Heads

  • The "Breakthrough Award" for Best of Show

  • WASCO Award for The Most Artistic Entry

  • Van Dyke Award for The Most Original and Creative Presentation

  • Pro1 Award

  • Artisan Award (Taxidermist's Choice Best of Show)

  • McKenzie Award (Taxidermist's Choice, Best Life Size Mammal)

  • McKenzie Award (Taxidermist's Choice, Best Game Head)

"Ever since I began taxidermy, I have always been attracted to the artistic side of the trade. Being an artist, I always look for the detail... I look at the overall mount, but I enjoy perfecting meticulous detail. I have seen some awful taxidermy around and I can't help but feel sorry for whoever it belongs to. I know how much time, money, and hard work goes into these trophies. I believe they deserve every bit of attention so people can look at them with pride."

Anna, Doug's Wife, is a Taxidermist in training. She's well on her way to being one of the top Taxidermists in the State. Anna has won several awards for her pieces at the Colorado State Taxidermy Competition. She likes to taxi small mammals and has definitely found her nitch! Anna also helps Doug finish trophies in the shop by completing all finish work.

Alyssa

This is a family business! Alyssa (Anna's Sister) joined the Ovis Wildlife team at the end of 2022 and plays a crucial role in hide preparation; from fleshing/salting to when the trophy is ready to begin the process of mounting. She also helps keep the shop clean and tidy and performs various tasks to keep us afloat!

Gavin, Doug's Son, won the 2012 Youth Division for his Sea Turtle Reproduction. Gavin is all grown up now and has just started his own welding business.
